It is often true that the most beautiful things are left unseen. Maybe this is why nature calls us sometimes to explore her lesser known gems. Smack in the middle of South India, Karnataka is so well strategically and geographically located that it is enriched with mountains, caves, beaches and the two powerful Ghats. And there is more to it beyond Kudremukh and Kodachadri. Did you know that the untouched places are the most resplendent, in their sea-green attires and fairy-like avatars? Here is an opportunity for you to travel the unexplored and shut away from the noise and the naysayers.

1. KOPATTY COORG TREK AND DUBARE ACTIVITIES

PC: Jolly

This is one of the weekend treks that is not just known for its dense forests but coffee plantations too. It has a rich wildlife trail and if you are luck, you may even make friends with them. Apart from these dense jungles, you can also hear the bubbling water streams and run across outspread meadows. If you’d like, the locals may also help you taste the spices of the South like pepper and elaichi.

On the second day, we get to do white water river rafting plus visit the Dubare Elephant Camp and white water rafting too. Before leaving for Bangalore you can pack some local coffee and honey.

Distance:
12 - 14 km
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

2. TAVOOR HILLS RIDGE WALK TREK

This is in Bhagamandala, Coorg, which makes this place one of the perfect weekend getaway destinations. The peak offers the best of the scenic views of Coorg. The trail in the Tavoor Hills is also known as Dumchi Gudde by the locals and is pretty challenging so the go-getters should be excited. One can also see the beautiful Kopatty Hill Range and the entire view of the Bhagmandala town from the top of Tavoor hills. As history suggests, Lords Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva surveyed Talacauvery Hill and Tavuru Hill or known as Tavoor Betta to decide the origin of the river Kaveri. The trek ends with a scary ridge walk and shear drop point so get ready to hear the butterflies scream your tummy.

Distance: 12 - 14 km
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

3. KOTTE BETTA TREK

This is the third highest peak in Coorg after Tadiandamol and Brahmagiri. It is about 5400 ft. It is about 15 kms from Madikeri and is located in Hattihole region, which is in between Somwarpet and Madikeri. The name of the hill is derived from Kannada, meaning Fort Hill. It rankles with history as locals believe that the famous Pandava brothers from Mahabharat spent a significant period of their exile here. It is said that during their exile they built several stone houses that still remain in areas of Coorg. Kotte Betta also has an ancient Shiva Temple on top of it. It rests on the lap of nature as one walks on clouds here. During monsoons it can be as windy as it gets anywhere. Some might even feel like it is the Shimla of South India and rightly so!

Distance: 15 - 16 kms
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

4. COORG KERALA TREK

PC: Jolly

This is not a regular trek; it is the only trek where we go in Coorg to Kerala. The entire trail is a wildlife trail and in a dense forest area. This is not for the weak-hearted as it involves blazing a challenging 23 kms. However, as the blocks are mainly in the mind, one can feel the accomplishment after reaching God’s Own Country after the trek. One of the major advantages of staying at the local homestay is that you get to taste their local cuisine of not just Coorg but Kerala also. Try some Kerala fish curry with Kerala parotha at the other end of the trek.

Distance: 23 km
Difficulty: Challenging

5. BAVIKONDA & KILCHIKIA PEAKS RIDGE TREK

PC: Karan

The trek starts from the foothills of Mullodi village situated in Karnataka. It is on the other side of the Kudremukh and situated in a reserve forest. It gives us a deep insight on the glorious natural abundance with the sheer variety of brooks and hills. Never in our trekking life we have seen a valley while going on the initial trials of the trek. A small but beautiful ridge-walk towards the peak makes this place one of the best trekking destinations from Bangalore and Mangaluru.
