The hill is surrounded by beautiful lakes on all the sides which makes the sunrise and the sunset more intense from the top of Hulukadi Betta. This also makes it one of the best places to trek around Bangalore.

Hulukadi Betta is not just a trekking destination but also has a historical as well as mythological story behind it. Atop the hill there is Veerabhadra Temple which has a 4 feet tall statue of Lord Veerabhadra which dates back to thousands of years. Lord Veerabhadra is also known as Nataraja; an incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is also said that Lord Veerabhadra and Lord Narasimha fought to stay at this place. Later, Lord Narasimha moved from Hulukadi Betta to Andhra Pradesh. It is believed that a large snake appears and surrounds itself around the statue of Lord Veerabhadra during the religious festival in the month of February. There are many mysteries surrounding Hulukadi Betta.

hulukadi betta

There are three temples of Lord Veerabhadra located in a triangular shape around Bangalore and one of them is situated at Hulukadi Betta, the other one is in Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh and the last one is said to be lost.

The Chola Kings constructed two temples on top of Hulukadi Betta after discovering a natural Shiva Linga along with a Nandi. The temples built by the Chola Kings were of Lord Veerabhadra and Lord Shiva. Later they had also built walls and watchtowers over Hulukadi Betta, which can still be seen.

Hulukadi Betta trek can be done from all the sides of the hill which makes the terrain and the difficulty level, a surprise for all. One of the common routes to reach the top of Hulukadi Betta is the pilgrimage route which is taken by most of the people paying their visit to Lord Veerabhadra. This route comprises of the staircases running up till the entrance of the temple.

So on a weekend you can see many people climbing the stairs to Lord Veerabhadra Temple on Hulukadi Betta.

The other route which Get Beyond Limits takes is towards the eastern side of the hill. There is also a lake adjoining the village which serves as the base for the trek for all the outdoor enthusiasts.

Trekking during a full moon makes the adventure more thrilling as the reflection of the moon shines back in the environment and brightens the darkness of the night. After crossing a few farms adjacent to the lake, the trail of Hulukadi Betta trek begins.

The peak of Hulukadi Betta is visible from the base. The base of the hill is surrounded with boulders and most of them have a good grip to climb.

hulukadi betta

This can be the best place to do a warm up of the bouldering techniques after learning some basic techniques of climbing including the concept of ‘3 point contact’. During the trek after the practise session we will have a small fun competition adding outdoor enthusiasts to different team and declaring the team which climbs the maximum boulders using the imparted techniques the winner.

If there is a lot of plantation post monsoon, the trail from here can get difficult to spot. That is why, the idea that we believe in is to stay together till the completion of the trek. While passing through the trails, once we hit the rocky slopes we can find small depressions that seem like stairs.

hulukadi betta

Climbing the hill using these depressions can be very helpful during the monsoons. On the way, there is a beautiful Nandi structure inside a man made cave. The next challenge and also a hint of the trail is to find the Nandi. It is important to note that one must strictly avoid entering these man-made caves as they can be a habitat to reptiles as well. The trail of Hulukadi Betta is inclined from the base of the hill itself. At times, we shall be negotiating with these inclinations by moving up sideways in order to make the ascend easy and fun.

Once the inclined trail is over, we reach the plateau of Hulukadi Betta which is quite large in area.

hulukadi betta

Soon you will find out that there are plenty of boulders surrounding you and as a team we shall find a place for the bivouac (more commonly known as ‘a temporary camp with tents or cover’). This is where we will explore the surrounding areas to get the twigs or dry wood and celebrate the greatness of Hulukadi Betta by doing a campfire and sharing stories around it if situation permits.

All the sides of the hill have their own charm, from the west, the terrain looks rocky, while from the north side it seems full of plantations and from the southern side it captures the concrete stairs. The southern side is used mostly by the pilgrims to visit Lord Veerabhadra’s Temple.

We believe that it is not just the destination but the journey that is important. So it is time to explore the plateau of Hulukadi Betta and challenge yourself to climb up as many boulders as you can.

hulukadi betta

For one reason, that these boulders don’t exist in Bangalore and you are at one of the best weekend places near Bangalore to experience the boulders, the open skies and the clouds, giving us clam and peace.

The route which Get Beyond Limits takes for Hulukadi Betta is known as a circuit trek because we will ascend the mighty hill from one side and descend it from the other. Doing a complete circuit! We will be using the concrete stairs from the southern side of the hill which is comparatively easy. While coming down we will also spot a small pond in our pathway which some locals like to get into and cool off.

hulukadi betta

While disembarking there are certain boulders which have ‘bee hives’ and it is advised not to interfere with their world. Once we reach the base, don’t settle for anything less, if you have time, explore the lake which is close to the foothills.
