HOW AND WHY TO STAY HYDRATED DURING A TREK

We all know water is a human being’s basic necessity, but when it comes to trekking people might easily forget it or ignore the importance of hydration. It is easy to ignore your water requirements when there is an inconvenience in finding yourself a washroom or when you don't want to leave your tent at midnight. While there is no particular solution to it, staying hydrated on a trek is very important to stay healthy and take clear decisions. The inability to make clear decisions can be one of the side effects of dehydration. Here are certain tips that might help you to stay hydrated during a trek-

Drink before beginning

Drink half a liter of water as soon as you wake up an empty stomach. Another half can be taken after an hour of waking up. While trekking in high altitude or warm temperature you should have at least 2 liters of water whereas while trekking in low altitude and cooler temperature you should have around 1 liter of water. Don't wait till you're thirsty take small water breaks in between your walk. If you feel tired, take a break and hydrate yourself. Upon reaching the campsite, drink at least 2 liters of water in small breaks.

Carry electrolytes

When sweating you are not only losing fluids from your body but also electrolytes. Having sports drinks is a good solution to avoid the loss of fluids from your body. The combination of sugar and electrolytes helps your body absorb fluids better which if found in most sports drinks.

Water intake capacity

Getting yourself used to take such amounts of liquids can be a difficult task sometimes, but you need to get your body used to fluids. Most of us are not even drinking the right amount of water in our daily lives, therefore, you need to start well in advance to make your body used to it.

Carrying the right amount of water

Planning how much water to take in advance is always a good idea. If you are trekking in high temperature carry more water. On a multi day trek is it always good to plan your water requirements well in advance. Research about the availability of natural water resource in your trek. Try to look for running water it is most likely to be fresh.

Limit the amount of caffeine intake

Drinks such as coffee or cola that contain caffeine should be avoided because they result in dehydration. Eating healthy is important, any sort of alcoholic or carbonated drinks should be avoided. Water can be substituted even in the form of warm drinks such as tea, soup, etc.

While trekking you can constantly lose water from your body in the form of sweat. Even while breathing we lose some amount of fluids from our body. Dehydration is one of the most common mistakes people make on treks. Our body keeps on losing fluids in breathing, sweating and urinating and if you don't take the right amount of fluids to compensate it, it may result in excess loss of fluids from your body. This leads to an increased risk of heat strokes, difficulty in making decisions and other complications. Staying hydrated sounds like a very small task but it is the most important thing to take care of while trekking.
