Dudhsagar Trek is one of the most popular treks from the Western Ghats of Karnataka and Goa. The trek from Karnataka side is banned by the Karnataka government from the past few years. But the trek from Goa side is open to everyone with a concept of ecotourism.
Dudhsagar is a four-tier waterfall during peak monsoon with a height of 1,050 feet. The water comes from Karnataka and falls into Goa making Dudhsagar the 5th largest waterfall of India and 227th largest waterfall in the world. The width of the waterfall is more than 100 feet. Also, the colour of the waterfall is white and hence has Dudh referring to milk in 'Hindi' language in its name. Dudhsagar forms Mandovi river which enters the Arabian sea from Miramar beach like a serpentine in old Portugal and now Goa. This beautiful Dudhsagar waterfall is part of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, Goa and is a popular weekend destination from Bangalore, Pune & Mumbai.

Dudhsagar is an overnight weekend journey from Bangalore. We will travel around 626 km to enter Goa and reach the base of Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek. Once everyone boards the Get Beyond Limits bus, a summary about the Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek would be provided by our outdoor leaders along with an introduction amongst the trekkers. We advise trekkers to have light dinner before boarding the bus. The idea is to get a good night's sleep so that we can enjoy this Bangalore weekend getaway.
As we do this long but worthwhile journey from Bangalore to Goa to reach this very beautiful waterfalls, we will see the vast highways turn into beautiful ghats. Once we reach the Dudhsagar homestay, we will get fresh and will be briefed about the day and etiquettes to be maintained followed by a tasty homemade breakfast. Meanwhile, we will also get our lunch packed for the much-awaited Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek.
It is mandatory for everyone going for Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek to take life jackets from the department in charge. Carrying jackets is one thing and knowing how to use is another. Make sure that the belts are always tight during the river crossing, that is where these life jackets are resourceful. A loose belt can be life-threatening when the role of a life jacket is required.
Team Get Beyond Limits will arrange life jackets for all the participants and briefs will be given on how to wear the life jackets properly.
The initial stretch of Dudhsagar Trek is a jeep trail. During summers the same route us used by the jeeps to reach a viewpoint of Dudhsagar Falls. The stretch has beautiful wild plantation on both sides.
There is also the Mandovi river flowing throughout the jeep trail. Few instances the water may be flowing at high pressure in the river. Depending on the situation the route will be altered by the local guides or Get Beyond Limits Outdoor Leaders along with the local guides. In that case, a slight deviation from jeep route can be done and the railway track parallel to this route can be chosen. During the trek, there are few places from where we can spot a glance of the mighty Dudhsagar falls.
Depending on the flow of the river and monsoon intensity, the river crossing can be done carefully and at most caution. The rocks tend to become very slippery on the river beds.
The number of river crossing is completely dependent on the season. In case the amount of water flowing is high an alternative route can be followed.
There is a beautiful small tower at the end of the jeep route. Enjoy and relax at the tower with the powerful view of Dudhsagar falls. Enjoy the sound of the Mandovi river flowing beneath the watchtower. From here we will gain altitude and start the climb to reach the falls. This trail is inside the woods and reaches the railway track.
There are two railway tunnels that go straight towards the base of the Dudhsagar Waterfall. One should always be on the corners of the tunnel. In case a train seems to be coming, be at the extreme corner and don't do anything which is not allowed. Life is beautiful and Goa government is trying its best to support trekking at Dudhsagar.
One can encounter water dripping from the top of the tunnel as one approaches its entrance. These can be used to refill your water bottles in case you are comfortable with fresh monsoon water as it comes straight from the majestic mountains of Western Ghats.
NATURAL WATER POOL
The government of Karnataka has taken steps to let Dudhsagar Waterfalls not just be accessible to trekkers but have also taken steps to ensure that everyone has a time worth remembering. There is a natural pool created very close to the trekking spot where the government allows trekkers getting into the water and enjoying the cool waters of Dudhsagar. For safety, it is mandatory rule by the government authorities that one can also get into the water wearing a life jacket. The government also has life guards occasionally at the spot.
NOTE: All participants registered with Get Beyond Limits will only be allowed to enter the pool if they are wearing their respective life jackets and if the life guards provided by Goa government are present at the time. Our Outdoor Leaders are trained Outdoor Enthusiasts not life guards.
It is time to be in the moment at Dudhsagar waterfalls. Explore the sides of the waterfall but don't venture into the pool formed by Dudhsagar fall at this point.
The pool can have undercurrents and each year unfortunate incidents happen due to carelessness. We must take in the sense of gratitude with the sound of the waterfall. Beauty must always be appreciated. It is important to draw that line between adventure and foolishness.
RETURN TO HOMESTAY
The route to return to the base camp will be the same. There are instances of going only on the railway track to reach the base of Dudhsagar but we don't support walking on the railway track for that long. Once we are back to Dudhsagar basecamp/homestay it is time to cherish the day and absorb the magic of this beautiful waterfalls.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR DAY 1:
- No river crossing without a proper life jacket. Jackets will be provided by team Get Beyond Limits for each and every participant.
- Take photos only when you are far from the slippery rocks and water.
EXPLORE GOA & THE BEACH
We will wake up early from the homestay so that we can experience the other side of Goa ie sea side. We will travel a small distance to each the western coast of India. We would like our team to explore not just the local Dudhsagar base and the market but also the beaches of Goa.
We don't deny the fact that the best therapy is beach therapy. We will leave for Bangalore after having a self-sponsored lunch at any of your favourite places with Goan or any other cuisines preferred by each one of you. After having lunch we shall start preparing for a long drive towards our home Bangalore.
DAY 3 (Early Morning)
It is a long 626 Km journey back to Bangalore. Our target is to
reach very early morning on Monday so that our work does not
get affected and we reach at a considerable time before office.
The drop points will be the same as pickup points.
The trek is only successful when the participants can feel a difference in them. The intent is to experience and believe in the concept of ‘Get Beyond Limits’ and conquer all the mental as well as the physical barriers of life. Always remember, ‘Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek' ka tempo high hai’ and so shall be yours.
