Gokarna is small town on the Western Coastal line having many beaches which serve as the best offbeat weekend destinations for trekking on the beach line. It is believed that Lord Shiva emerged from a Cow’s Ear (Mother Earth) here which is why it is called Gokarna. Gokarna is a conflux between the Sayadhris and the Arabian Sea with hillocks surrounding the beach. Trekking on the coastal line is a beautiful as well as a challenging experience because of the humid conditions at the shore.

This is going to be a midnight journey of 520 kms from Bangalore to Kudle Beach which is the base beach of the trek. A brief summary about the trek and introduction among trekkers will be done overnight. We advise trekkers to have light dinner before boarding as the last stretch of the overnight journey will be through the winding roads. The overnight journey will be very exciting to make it to make it to the perfect destination for a weekend beach trek.
The morning at Gokarna gives a feeling of sacredness and spiritualism to the untouched place and also a sense of thrill with the waves at the beaches. Our experience will start from Paradise Beach to Kudle Beach covering Om Beach as well as Half Moon Beach.
Being at Paradise Beach will definitely remind you of the movie 'The Beach' featuring Leonardo Dicaprio living at a beach. It is one of the peaceful beaches which was quite virgin and did lack human touch couple of year back when we started. Usually there are no dependable sources of food and water at Paradise Beach.
Paradise Beach is surrounded by palm trees and has rocks on the shore which can be used for bouldering. One can even spot some wild paintings on the rocks which makes it a psychedelic experience during the trip. This is one of the best beaches spread in solace on the shores of Western coastline.
HALF MOON BEACH
The route to Half Moon Beach starts from Paradise beach with a hike next to the ocean.
On the way, one can see Nirvana Beach of Kumta across the sea in the direction of Paradise beach. There are several points on the route where one needs to climb small boulders on the trail to reach a beautiful rock we like to call ‘The Shiva Climb’.
As we proceed towards Half Moon Beach, we will witness a huge boulder at the shore also known as Hell Cliff. Our idea is to push our limits to climb the boulder we like to call ‘The Shiva Climb’ with all the safety. We will learn about the ‘3 Point Contact’ climbing method and only then climb the boulder. At the same time we will make sure that the spotter will always be there. This can be a risky exercise but is not mandatory. This is for all those outdoor enthusiasts who would like to do things they might have not done before and feel the way they haven’t felt definitely under the guidance of our Outdoor Leaders.
After Shiva Climb, our beautiful Half Moon Beach is just few hundred meters away.
ROCK OF PEACE
Have you ever thought of sitting on a huge rock next to a beach with sun setting right in front of your eyes? This is same place where you can spot lazy dolphins. There is abundance of color in the sky when the sun sets. At times one can find music being played at this spot by the hippies who visit Gokarna.
Before it gets dark we head towards Om Beach. Follow the same route you too to rock of Peace and take a left just after a few meters. Do it before it gets dark to be on the safer side if you have decided to do this trek by yourself. If you have come with Get Beyond Limits then sit back and enjoy as the sky paint a picture for you after the sun sets as our Outdoor Leaders take charge of the route.
Om Beach is 2-3 km long hiking stretch from the end of Half Moon Beach. The stretch is quite inclined and goes straight towards Om Beach. On the sides of the trail there are lot of wild thorny plantation and on other side shear drop with a great view of sea. From one point you can see a lonely coconut tree. If we go further down we can see one huge rock and we call it Rock of Peace.
Kudle beach is almost 1 km from one end to the other and this is the same place where we are expecting to have dinner. The beach has an arch shape where the sun dwells to provide the most amazing beach experience. Kudle beach hike takes around 15 mins from one corner to the other. This beach gives a sublime experience. This is the place where we relax ourselves and stargaze from the beach as we hear the sound of the waves hitting the shore.
As you would witness the sun setting into the Arabian Sea, the day will slowly give way to the night. We will be next to the ocean as we will witness the sky change its colour from blue to golden to different shades of grey as it finally changes to black. As the canvas of the sky changes its colours, we will welcome the stars and the countless constellations which are usually not visible from the city.
Walking the trails at night is a different experience altogether. As we will trek from Om Beach to Kudle beach, the stars and the moonlight will be there to make sure we connect with Gokarna at night. If the situation permits, we will conclude the day by having a beautiful team campfire under the supervision and guidance of the Outdoor Leaders, share stories with each other and make memories which will perhaps last with us forever!
GOKARNA BEACH DAWN
The sky turns a vibrant red towards the east. Only few are lucky enough to watch the sunrise from a hillock and a beach. We believe in giving personal space for exploring to everyone. All those who are interested to watch the sunrise from a hillock close to Gokarna Beach wake up early morning and walk towards the place.
The spot is around 10 to 15 minutes by walk from our homestay.
A Shiva Temple built in 4th century CE in Dravadian style also known as ‘Aatma Linga’. This temple is a center of attraction for many mysteries around the place. All those outdoor enthusiasts interested should reach to the venue on time as told by Outdoor Leader so that we can start back to Bangalore.
Making the most of the return journey to Bangalore, one can come across the might fort of 'Queen of Pepper' called Mirjan Fort. There are many stories associated with this mysterical fort and as per these tales, this fort is as old as 1200 AD. Though the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) confirm reconstruction of the fort around 1600 AD.
This fort is a great place to explore the then very popular sea trading center of the western coast of India. While you get lost in the stories of the past, do remember that the journey to Bangalore still needs to be undertaken and the visit to Mirjan fort should not delay the time we reach Bangalore.
