Skandagiri is one of the most known weekend destination from Bangalore. It is around 70 kms from Bangalore and has the best sunrise to offer. This place has always been in controversy but with new trekking permits it has become easy and legal to do Skandagiri Trek.
Skandagiri is a fortress hill and is also known as Kalavara Durga. It is said that Tipu Sultan build it to fight against the British. Later when Tipu Sultan lost to British it was dismantled in 1791.
The base of Skandagiri Hill Trek starts from Kalwara Village of Chikkaballapur district. There is a temple on the foothills of Skandagiri known as Papagni Mutt. It is one of the oldest mutt’s of Karnataka. This is one of the places where trekkers from Bangalore can rest before starting the trek.
"Both the outdoor leaders interacted well with the participants and the trek felt like a breeze to climb with their encouragement. I don't think anyone was really disappointed despite not being able to witness a proper sunrise, which is a testament in itself as to how much the group enjoyed itself with the two OLs."

The trails starts from the forest department hutt after crossing Papagni Mutt. There are sign boards where major deviations are on the trail. After the first left from the route we start a inclined hike between the boulders and minor bushes of Skandagiri.
There are certain rocky patches where going slow and steady will be the key. At times you can also negotiate by going on the side of the trail and later connecting to the main trail.
The trail continues to be straight till we cross the midway point and reach certain caves near the ruined fort gates. There are broken walls which were part of the fort also known as Kalavara Durga.
We further go on the narrow trail which takes us to an edge of the hill.
Taking a right turn from here will take you towards the summit of Skandagiri where you will find a beautiful Nandi. At the summit, relax yourself with a view which you have rightly deserved.
At times one can witness the clouds floating underneath you! There are certain fort structures too which can be used as a temporary shelter against cold. Never forget that with each day as the sunrise, hope soars.
This is your time to feel nature after climbing Skandagiri Hill. We want this trek a memory for you to push your limits. If you can climb for sunrise you can always rise like the sun and bring light into the darkness.
The trek is only successful when the outdoor enthusiasts feel a difference in their lives to Get Beyond Limits and conquer all the barriers in life. Always remember, Skandagiri ka tempo high hai, and so shall be yours.
